For years, I lived under the weight of an internal narrative that dictated perfection as the only path to worthiness. This harsh treatment wasn’t confined within myself; it seeped into my interactions, inadvertently affecting those around me with a similar intensity of judgment and expectation.

However, a pivotal moment of realization came when I understood that the foundation of external kindness is deeply rooted in how we treat ourselves. By adopting a gentler approach toward myself, I learned that kindness is not merely an action but a state of being that begins from within. This was not an overnight transformation but a gradual awakening to the immense power of self-compassion.

As I ventured deeper into self-awareness, I discovered that many of us, especially women, are conditioned to prioritize the needs of others above our own. This often leaves us feeling depleted and disconnected from our own needs. I learned that being kind to ourselves isn’t an act of selfishness but a crucial element for a balanced and fulfilling life. As I navigated my path towards gentleness, I embraced several practices that became pillars of my daily life:

  1. Transforming Inner Dialogue: Through the healing practice of Brainspotting, I shifted my inner narrative from criticism to compassion, reminding myself daily, “I am doing my best, and that is enough.”
  2. Artistic Expression: When words felt too rigid, I turned to colors and art to express my emotions, letting each hue speak where words could not.
  3. Affirmations of Worth: Each morning, I would affirm my worthiness, reminding myself: “I am worthy. I am enough. I deserve kindness.”
  4. Essential Self-Care: Recognizing that self-care is not indulgence but a necessity, I scheduled regular ‘me-time’ to replenish my spirit, just as I would any crucial appointment.
  5. Learning to Say No: Setting boundaries and learning to say no without guilt helped me respect my limits and prioritize my well-being.
  6. Mindful Growth Through Additional Practices: Continuously engaging in mindfulness practices enriched my journey.
